The Legacy of Fear: How the Shadow of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Shaped Kenya's Political Landscape In the annals of Kenya's political history, the events of 1969 stand out as a defining moment marked by fear, coercion, and manipulation. The political tension surrounding Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's candidature led to a series of oath-taking ceremonies in Gatundu that forever altered the fabric of Kenyan society. Understanding this historical context is crucial, especially when contemporary politicians attempt to invoke these dark chapters for political gain. The Fear of Jaramogi and the Birth of the Gatundu Oath The roots of the infamous Gatundu oath can be traced back to the fear and propaganda surrounding Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the former vice-president and then-leader of the opposition. By 1969, the political landscape in Kenya was charged with tension. The assassination of Cabinet Minister Tom Mboya on 5th July 1969 had already set a volatile backdrop. Within this context, Pr...

President William Ruto's UDA Party Elections: A Sham of Incompetence and Mismanagement

Discover how President William Ruto's UDA party elections descended into chaos, marred by voter ID glitches, theft of equipment, and delays. If they can't run transparent party elections, can we trust them to govern a nation of 56 million?

In a nation eagerly anticipating transparent and fair elections on 2027, after the debacle experienced in 2022, President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has showcased a staggering display of ineptitude and failure. As grassroots elections kicked off in various counties, what ensued was nothing short of a circus of confusion, malfunctioning gadgets, and outright theft of equipment.

Voter Identification Hitches and Late Starts

In Nairobi, the supposed epicenter of political activity, chaos reigned supreme. Biometric gadgets failed to identify a significant number of voters, including notable figures like Governor Johnson Sakaja and Dagoretti South Member of Parliament John Kiarie. Governor Sakaja himself faced the embarrassment of being absent from the party's registry, a shocking revelation for a prominent political figure. (This as rumours circulate that UDA bigwigs are grossly disappointed in Sakaja's tenure at City Hall.)

Theft of Equipment and Delays

Meanwhile, in West Pokot County, voting was delayed until 4 pm due to the theft of election materials, leaving voters frustrated and disenfranchised. Similar incidents unfolded in other regions, with reports of stolen equipment and last-minute rushes to rectify the situation.X

Lack of Transparency and Accountability

The narrative of incompetence and mismanagement continued to unfold across the nation. In Narok County, election materials mysteriously surfaced in a forest, raising serious concerns about the transparency of the process. Such incidents cast doubt on the integrity of the entire electoral exercise and undermine the democratic principles that should govern our nation.

Empty Promises and Excuses

In response to the chaos, UDA party officials offered hollow reassurances and empty promises. UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala urged patience, citing the use of digital platforms as an excuse for the monumental failures witnessed. Such feeble attempts to deflect blame only serve to highlight the utter lack of accountability within the party's ranks.

A Glimpse into the Future?

If President William Ruto's UDA party cannot even conduct transparent and credible elections for their own grassroots members, how can we trust them to govern a nation of 56 million people? The sheer ineptitude and failure on display raise serious questions about the party's ability to uphold democratic principles and ensure free, fair, and democratic elections in 2027.

It's time for Kenyans to demand accountability and transparency from our political leaders. The future of our democracy depends on it.
