The Legacy of Fear: How the Shadow of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Shaped Kenya's Political Landscape In the annals of Kenya's political history, the events of 1969 stand out as a defining moment marked by fear, coercion, and manipulation. The political tension surrounding Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's candidature led to a series of oath-taking ceremonies in Gatundu that forever altered the fabric of Kenyan society. Understanding this historical context is crucial, especially when contemporary politicians attempt to invoke these dark chapters for political gain. The Fear of Jaramogi and the Birth of the Gatundu Oath The roots of the infamous Gatundu oath can be traced back to the fear and propaganda surrounding Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the former vice-president and then-leader of the opposition. Neglected Shakahola Bodies: Governor Mung’aro to dump Shakahola corpses in Nairobi

In a startling revelation, Governor Gideon Mung’aro of Kilifi County has issued a stern warning to the Ruto government over its neglect of the Shakahola bodies, once a focal point of national attention. The governor's frustration stems from the lack of action by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki despite promises of assistance.

The Shakahola massacre, a tragic event that claimed numerous lives, garnered nationwide sympathy. However, as time passed, the bodies, now preserved for over a year at the Malindi Sub-county Hospital, have become a grim reminder of governmental inaction.

Governor Mung’aro's ultimatum to remove the bodies within a week or face their transportation to Nairobi underscores the severity of the situation. The foul smell emanating from the containers has not only become a public nuisance but also hindered the county's development efforts.

Despite the county's expenditure of millions in electricity bills and maintenance costs, the national government has failed to provide the necessary support. This neglect not only reflects poorly on the government's commitment to addressing humanitarian crises but also raises questions about accountability and responsibility.

The governor's call for action is not without merit. Practical solutions must be implemented urgently to address this humanitarian issue. Firstly, the national government must fulfil its promise to reimburse the county for expenses incurred. Secondly, a comprehensive plan for the dignified disposal or release of the bodies to their respective families is imperative.

Moreover, there is a pressing need for increased collaboration between the national and county governments to prevent similar crises in the future. This includes establishing protocols for handling mass casualties and ensuring adequate resources are allocated for such eventualities.

The neglect of the Shakahola bodies by the Ruto government is a grave injustice that cannot be overlooked. Governor Mung’aro's bold stance serves as a wake-up call for decisive action and accountability. It is time for the government to prioritize the welfare of its citizens and uphold the values of compassion and responsibility.
