The Legacy of Fear: How the Shadow of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Shaped Kenya's Political Landscape In the annals of Kenya's political history, the events of 1969 stand out as a defining moment marked by fear, coercion, and manipulation. The political tension surrounding Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's candidature led to a series of oath-taking ceremonies in Gatundu that forever altered the fabric of Kenyan society. Understanding this historical context is crucial, especially when contemporary politicians attempt to invoke these dark chapters for political gain. The Fear of Jaramogi and the Birth of the Gatundu Oath The roots of the infamous Gatundu oath can be traced back to the fear and propaganda surrounding Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the former vice-president and then-leader of the opposition. By 1969, the political landscape in Kenya was charged with tension. The assassination of Cabinet Minister Tom Mboya on 5th July 1969 had already set a volatile backdrop. Within this context, Pr

WIKILEAKS RELEASES LETTER CLAIMING LUCY KIBAKI ORDERED KILLING OF PROMINENT POLITICIANS.

In what might turn out to be the lowest point of Kibaki’s presidency (save for the post-election violence ensuing from his stealing the 2007 elections), WikiLeaks has released a letter from a Kenya Police executioner which sensationally claims that former First Lady Lucy Kibaki and retired Commissioner of Police Major General Mohammed Hussein Ali ordered the killing of prominent politicians, among them Martha Karua and Gitobu Imanyara. The letter names powerful individuals in Kibaki's government as architects of the diabolical scheme. Apparently—but not very surprisingly—Kibaki was not aware of what was cooking right under his nose. The letter also claims that the assassinations were first rehearsed on prominent businessmen.

The politicians monitored for assassination were Paul Muite, Ferdinand Waititu, G.G. Kariuki, Bonny Khalwale, Gitobu Imanyara, Martha Karua and businesswoman-turned politico Mary Wambui. It is instructive that Mary Wambui is the co-wife whom Lucy made Kibaki deny in public.

The letter further says the police killed 1,869 Mungiki alongside 631 suspected robbers and carjackers. The writer claims that he personally killed 42 people. He added that they were paid KSh. 25,000 per week in allowances, and the unit to carry out the political assassinations were to be paid KSh. 150,000 each. The police unit in question is the now defunct Kwekwe Squad. Former Internal Security Minister Prof. George Saitoti was altogether kept in the dark about the whole affair, but was “used to issue reports in Parliament." Saitoti himself later died in 2012 in a suspicious helicopter crash.

At the time of the letter, the police were dealing with the dreaded Mungiki menace and their benefactors. The letter says Kikuyu men were the main targets for the killings, but doesn't show whether the politicians were targeted for perceived Mungiki links or for separate motives. In killing members of the Mungiki, the police deployed the same tactics that the sect used: "We tie their necks, hands and legs, and hang them on trees and even cars until they are dead,” says the letter. Former head of the Special Crimes Prevention Unit, Richard Katola SSP, who died in 2015, features prominently in the letter, and at least a dozen police officers who conducted the killings have since died or mysteriously disappeared.

Martha Karua has confirmed the authenticity of the letter. Even after Karua defended her husband with her life in the wake of the 2007 rigged elections, it is shocking that Lucy still wanted her dead.
