The Legacy of Fear: How the Shadow of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Shaped Kenya's Political Landscape In the annals of Kenya's political history, the events of 1969 stand out as a defining moment marked by fear, coercion, and manipulation. The political tension surrounding Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's candidature led to a series of oath-taking ceremonies in Gatundu that forever altered the fabric of Kenyan society. Understanding this historical context is crucial, especially when contemporary politicians attempt to invoke these dark chapters for political gain. The Fear of Jaramogi and the Birth of the Gatundu Oath The roots of the infamous Gatundu oath can be traced back to the fear and propaganda surrounding Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the former vice-president and then-leader of the opposition. By 1969, the political landscape in Kenya was charged with tension. The assassination of Cabinet Minister Tom Mboya on 5th July 1969 had already set a volatile backdrop. Within this context, Pr

African Myths, Fables, and Stories: The Tale of the Clever Gen Z Rabbits and the Mighty Ruto-Inkalimeva

Once upon a time, in the bustling savannas and vibrant cities of Kenya, there lived a generation known as Gen Z. These youngins were sharp-witted, tech-savvy, and utterly fearless. They were the rabbits of their time; small in stature but mighty in intellect and spirit.
In the same land, there reigned a powerful creature known as Ruto-Inkalimeva. This beast (the African version of Smaug in the Lonely Mountain), with its imposing presence and insatiable hunger for treasure and power, sought to impose a fearsome burden on the people—
the monstrous Finance Bill 2024 that threatened to devour their hopes and dreams as
the Ruto-Inkalimeva  appropriated every last shiny shilling.
The Ruto-Inkalimeva lived under the delusion that it was invincible, appointed by God himself, and towered over the land with its iron grip on the nation's resources. It promised grandiose and outlandish schemes and projects, like the high-tech SPYDER Missile Defence System, while the people struggled to find food and pay for basic needs.
The creature's latest plot was to raise taxes, squeezing every last coin from the hardworking Kenyans, especially targeting the youth, who were already burdened by a high cost of living, their bright future mortgaged for lifelong debt in a government-led spending spree.

But the Gen Z rabbits were not ones to be intimidated. With their smartphones as their shields and social media as their swords, they hatched a plan to outsmart the mighty Ruto-Inkalimeva. (Going forward, the boomers in the Ruto-Inkalimeva government might find it prudent to spend less time shaking hands and more time on social media...they have been accused of being out of touch with the grassroots.)
The rabbits mobilised through hashtags like #RejectFinanceBill2024 and #OccupyParliament, uniting their voices into a powerful chorus that echoed across the digital savannas.

One bright Tuesday, the Gen Z rabbits gathered in the heart of Nairobi. Armed not with weapons but with wit, they protested peacefully, their determination unwavering. No stone was thrown; no property vandalized. Their strength lay in their unity and their ability to turn the tide of public opinion.

The Ruto-Inkalimeva, in a desperate attempt to quell the rising tide, tried to silence them with live bullets, tear gas and unwarranted arrests.

Over 200 brave rabbits were taken into custody, but this only fuelled the fire of resistance. Civil society groups and lawyers rallied to their cause, demanding their immediate release.

As the protests continued, the Ruto-Inkalimeva made a critical mistake. It tried to placate the people with minor concessions, dropping a proposed 16% VAT on bread and altering other levies. But the Gen Z rabbits saw through the façade. They knew that these were mere crumbs compared to the feast of taxes the beast still intended to impose.

Meanwhile, on the dark side of the moon, the Parliamentary Majority Leader in Ruto-Inkalimevaland, one Kimani Ichung'wah, a loyal servant and rumoured muka of the Ruto-Inkalimeva, made a blunder that only added fuel to the fire.
In a misguided attempt at goodwill in a country eyeballs-deep in distress as a direct consequence of his thoughtless policies, muka wa Ruto tweeted a Happy Eid Al Adha message to "our Muslim brothers and sisters," ostensibly, complete with a photo of himself in Islamic garb holding an iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Gen Z rabbits pounced on this faux pas, turning it into a viral mockery that spread faster than a TikTok challenge.

"Just stop tweeting, for God's sake," one observer pleaded, as memes and jests flooded the social media landscape. The rabbits laughed and jeered, their cleverness and humour dismantling the aura of invincibility surrounding the Ruto-Inkalimeva and its cohorts.

The climax of this tale will come on this fateful and decisive Thursday.
The Gen Z rabbits, undeterred by arrests and threats, and heeding the social media call #TuputaneThursday, will gather once more. They will stand outside Parliament, their resolve stronger than ever. They will chant, they will sing, and they will Tweet, TikTok, and Instagram it all, all the while playing cat-and-mouse games with the Ruto-Inkalimeva's police force, in and out of the streets of Nairobi, their collective voice reverberating through the halls of power.
The Ruto-Inkalimeva, sensing the tide turning, will begin to falter. Its grandiose plans and ill-conceived taxes are no match for the united front of the Gen Z rabbits. These young heroes, with their mix of courage, intellect, and humour, have proved that even the mightiest beast can be brought to its knees by the smallest and most underestimated of foes.
And so, the legend of the Gen Z rabbits will spread far and wide. They have shown that in the face of adversity, the power of unity, cleverness, and peaceful protest can triumph over tyranny. The Ruto-Inkalimeva's reign of terror has been challenged, and the spirit of the Kenyan people soars ever higher.
As the sun sets on that victorious day, the Gen Z rabbits will celebrate their hard-fought success, knowing that their battle os far from over; if anything, it's just began. But they had proven one thing for certain: no matter how powerful the beast, the voice of the people, united and unwavering, will always prevail.
And thus, the tale of the Gen Z rabbits and the Ruto-Inkalimeva was etched into the annals of Kenyan folklore, a timeless reminder of the enduring power of the people's voice.
