The Legacy of Fear: How the Shadow of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Shaped Kenya's Political Landscape In the annals of Kenya's political history, the events of 1969 stand out as a defining moment marked by fear, coercion, and manipulation. The political tension surrounding Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's candidature led to a series of oath-taking ceremonies in Gatundu that forever altered the fabric of Kenyan society. Understanding this historical context is crucial, especially when contemporary politicians attempt to invoke these dark chapters for political gain. The Fear of Jaramogi and the Birth of the Gatundu Oath The roots of the infamous Gatundu oath can be traced back to the fear and propaganda surrounding Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the former vice-president and then-leader of the opposition. By 1969, the political landscape in Kenya was charged with tension. The assassination of Cabinet Minister Tom Mboya on 5th July 1969 had already set a volatile backdrop. Within this context, Pr

Kuria Kimani: A Cautionary Tale of Illogical Sycophancy and Hilarious Consequences

Molo Member of Parliament, Kuria Kimani, is currently nursing the fallout of his illogical support for President William Ruto’s contentious Finance Bill 2024, aptly dubbed "Satan's Bill." The damage to his reputation and property raises an important question: was the KSh 2 million bribe he received to vote 'yes' worth the ensuing chaos and hilarity?

The Fallout from Supporting the Finance Bill
Kuria Kimani, who serves as chair of the parliamentary Finance Committee and the purveyor of the Finance Bill 2024, faced a fierce backlash from his constituents. The controversial bill, which sparked nationwide protests, saw the MP’s rural home in Molo subjected to a violent raid on Tuesday, 25 June, the peak of the #RejectFinanceBill2024 demos.

During the raid, properties and investments worth millions were destroyed, painting a vivid picture of the high cost of political misjudgement.

The Raid and Its Aftermath
Upon assessing the damage, it was revealed that three vehicles were ruined, two of which—a hatchback and a Land Cruiser—were burnt to crisps. The third, a double-cabin pickup, sustained damage from stones. The MP’s agricultural hustle also suffered a significant setback.

In a bizarre twist harking back to the criminal and politically motivated invasion of President Uhuru Kenyatta's Northland farm at the beginning of the the Ruto regime, 10,000 chickens being reared on Kuria's compound met a grisly fate. (Recall that the "posh" #RejectFinanceBill2024 protesters are partial to kuku na minofu.) Some were stolen, while 200 were burnt during the incident. Additionally, six grade cows and 29 goats vanished into thin air. Although police investigations led to the recovery of four cows, one had already been slaughtered, and efforts to trace the remaining goats are ongoing.

Kuria’s two-storey residence did not fare any better, with windows smashed, leading to the need for significant repairs. The residents’ anger stemmed from Kuria’s unwavering support for the Finance Bill, which was perceived as a betrayal of their interests. And yet, he had been warned weeks in advance.
The Hilarious Downfall
The irony of the situation was not lost on anyone, as the MP, evidently drunk as a skunk, stumbled through the sober baraza. The absurdity of an MP addressing alcohol issues while inebriated added a touch of dark comedy to the unfolding drama.

Was It Worth It?
In the end, the losses Kuria Kimani faced raise an important question: was the KSh 2 million he pocketed to vote for the Finance Bill worth the damage to his property, investments, and reputation? The backlash from his constituents and the destruction of his assets seem to answer that question with a resounding 'no,' which ideally should have aligned with his vote.
Kuria Kimani’s ordeal serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of illogical political sycophancy. His experience highlights the importance of MPs staying attuned to the needs and sentiments of their constituents. As Kuria reflects on his decisions, he must now navigate the arduous path of rebuilding his standing with the people of Molo—hopefully, without another booze-fuelled fiasco.

This entire debacle is a stark reminder that in politics, as in life, actions have consequences, and sometimes, those consequences are as hilarious as they are devastating.
